Roughly fifty cars have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Cars, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Officers state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then located numerous other smeared cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say early analysis suggest the fluid was likely human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its source; authorities are currently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.
City officials stated they were working "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the public for information.
An important representative stated the incident rendered him without words and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on online, recalling the death of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
